Thanks to the digital euro, electronic payments will be able to be made at a shop with a degree of privacy similar to what we experience today using banknotes. Not only that, we will be able to keep our money at a private bank but, in fact, at the central bank without the worry of not being able to withdraw it from a cash machine. But why is it necessary for the ECB to issue the digital euro? What will be the technical features of this new coin? And above all, what are the effects on how the financial system works and on our everyday lives?

Emilio Barucci is a Professor of Mathematical Finance at the Politecnico di Milano. He is the director of QFinLab, the Quantitative Finance Laboratory of the same university, of the Master in Quantitative Finance and of the Master Fintech GSOM-Politecnico di Milano. The author of more than one hundred publications and books, he deals with quantitative finance, macroeconomics, asset management and fintech. With Egea he has published: Chi salverà la finanza. A dieci anni dalla crisi l’etica non basta (2018) and Euro digitale. Una sfida da vincere nell’interesse di tutti (2023), among others.
