Algocracy and the tools for countering the overwhelming power of algorithms

Workshop

This activity is only available in italian

In the digital age we are not users but products. Platforms use us: they collect our data and profile us to sell more. All of this to the detriment of our privacy, often also putting our reputation and security at risk.

Is there anything we can do to counteract this overwhelming power? Technology is both the problem and, if we want it, the solution: for every piece of software that exploits us (some even talk about 'digital surplus value'), there are others, often free, that allow us to regain control over our digital lives. Digital marketing and online advertising also exploit users' cognitive biases to sell more: what are their tricks and how can we combat them?

This talk lifts the lid on algocracy and explores its future evolution.
