The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in our daily lives is increasing, and with it, the energy consumption of data centers, the engine of the digital revolution, is also growing. It is indeed data centers that power AI technology, but their hunger for energy is growing exponentially: today they consume between 220 and 320 TWh per year, with growth expected to reach up to 8% by 2030.
In this context, Italy is establishing itself as a new hub for data centers, with a recorded capacity in 2023 of 430 MW (3% of national demand) and growth surpassing cities like London, Frankfurt, and Paris. Will we be able to power innovation sustainably? Italy has the potential to become a reference point for sustainable data centers, but to attract investments, a strategic plan is needed to ensure efficiency, energy security, and competitiveness.
