Auto a guida autonoma: una nuova era della mobilità personale

One of the biggest problems facing mankind in the coming decades will be the drastic reduction of greenhouse gas emissions derived from fossil fuels which personal transportation systems (cars) are among the biggest culprits of. A blanket electrification of cars would seem the most obvious solution, but it is a solution that is unlikely to be effective in the short term. The transition to a sustainable transportation system will involve a radically different model based on shared cars. However, this new transportation model requires an enabling technology: the self-driving car based on the most advanced artificial intelligence technologies. This will be the real technological challenge of the mobility of the future.

Sergio Matteo Savaresi (Manerbio, 1968) has a degree in Electronical Engineering, a PhD in Automation Engineering (Milan Polytechnic, 1992 and 1997) and a degree in Mathematics (Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, 2000). After his PhD he worked for McKinsey&Co’s Milan office. Since 2006 he has been Full Professor of Automation at the Milan Polytechnic, where he is Director of the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering for the 2023-2025 three-year period. He has developed the following courses: “Automation and control in vehicles” and “Model identification and data analysis”. Sergio Savaresi founded the MOVE research group in 2001, which focused on the development of research activities in the field of vehicle control systems. MOVE today is one of the world's leading research groups in the field of vehicle control systems.
He is the author of more than 500 international scientific publications (including five books) and more than 50 patents. His research interests mainly concern control systems for vehicles and transportation. Over the past five years, he has coordinated more than 150 applied research and development projects in collaboration with leading companies in the vehicle industry. He is co-founder of ten 'innovative start-up' companies (including e-Novia Spa, listed on Euronext Growth from 16/12/2022). He is the team leader of the PoliMOVE team. PoliMOVE is the winning team of the 'Autonomous Challenge' at the CES in Las Vegas (7/1/22 and 7/1/23), at the Texas Motor Speedway (11/11/2022), and at Monza (18/6/23) as well as holder of the world speed record for a fully self-driving vehicle (Cape Canaveral, FL, 27/4/2022)
